North Oxon Midnight Challenge

GENERAL INFORMATION (Midnight Challenge)

The Midnight Exercise will begin at 4:00pm (depending on team numbers) as teams head off to their first base. The aim of completing the event by 01.30 hours on the Sunday. Over the course of the afternoon, and night the teams will visit each base once and undertake a task. The event will finish when all teams have visited each base. After a nightís sleep and breakfast, the scores will be revealed and the trophy presented. Tents can be pitched from 13:30 hrs on Saturday afternoon.

Leaders are required to man and run an activity at each base. Can all Troops who would like to enter a team, please supply a base. Troops can enter additional teams but will need to provide additional bases in support. Can all Leaders who are supplying a base please inform Logger of the nature of the base as soon as possible so no duplication occurs. Site preference would be considered providing requests are made by September 5th. Please do not book your site direct with Horley.

TEAMS

Teams may consist of between 4 and 6 young people who are Scouts/Explorers.

BASES

The activity at each base should last no more than 20 minutes and will be either based on a test of teamwork, ingenuity and skill. If you need base ideas please contact me as i have 10 reserve base idea which are simple to set up and run.

Each base will be scored out of 100 and will be marked as follows:

  • Approach to the base 10 points
  • Effort 30 points
  • Achieving Task 30 points
  • Teamwork 30 points

MEALS

Halfway around the challenge teams will be required to cook a meal for themselves at the base and will be marked on the meal element as a base score.

Snacks / emergency rations have been included in the individual kit list should Scouts require something either side of the meal break.

On the Sunday morning, and before the points are announced and the trophy is presented, Breakfast and hot drinks will be available.

Please bring health forms with you on the day. One for each Scout and one for each Leader. If you have a standard Troop health form that duplicates the requested information then a copy of each personís is fine.

15.40 hrs Base leaders to collect teams and take them to start points

15.50 hrs Teams leave start points and head for their first base

16.00 hrs Teams start their first challenge

01.20 hrs Teams finish their last challenge (Subject to change)

01.40 hrs Team & Base Score cards returned to Event HQ (Subject to Change)

CLOTHING & EQUIPMENT

All Team members must be adequately clothed for the forecast weather conditions. As it can be cold

and wet in October, it is the Scout Leaderís responsibility to ensure that a team is correctly clothed and

capable of completing the north oxon Midnight challenge without suffering the effects of the weather.

Please see list below on what to bring. Uniform must be worn to and from the event.

INDIVIDUAL EQUIPMENT

  • Sleeping Bag & Sleeping Mat. Wrap sleeping bag inside a plastic bag and keep it there until itís needed.
  • Full uniform

To be worn to and from the event

Each team member must carry or wear during the exercise.

  • Waterproof Jacket & Trousers.
  • Strong Shoes or Boots.
  • Warm Clothing. Each Team Member should wear clothing that will ensure that he/she does not suffer the effects of cold.
  • Torch (with spare bulb & batteries).
  • Whistle
  • Warm Hat & Gloves
  • Knife, Fork & Spoon
  • Bowl, Plate & Mug.
  • Water Bottle. Used for drinking water
  • Snacks / Rations for the event (Chocolate bars, snacks etc)

TEAM EQUIPMENT

  • Tents appropriate to the size of the Team.

To be carried at all times during the exercise:

  

  • First Aid Kit. The team should carry during the event a basic first aid kit.
  • Waterproof Map Case. This should be used to carry the Midnight Exercise map and instructions during the event.
  • Notebook & Pen.
  • Trangia/lightweight stove
  • Food for the Meal challenge
